The Tal Chhapar Sanctuary is in the Churu district of Rajasthan. Located on the fringes of Great Indian Desert. The sanctuary is 132 km away from Bikaner and was a Private Hunting Resort of Bikaner which has a flat saline depression known as ‘Tal’.
This unique ecosystem has open grasslands where a special grass is found, and the seed of this grass is pearl shaped, and hence it is known as ‘Motiya’. This grass is sweet in taste, and people eat it.
Tal Chhapar Sanctuary is the sole place with a vast population of black bucks. There are around 1680 black bucks which move in a herd of 500-700 and eat “Mothiya” as their food.
This Tal in the heart of Thar Desert is a refuge of Blackbuck bird. The grassland is scattered with Acacia and Prosopis trees. Migratory birds pass through this ecosystem during September. Harriers, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Short-Toes Eagle, Sparrow, Little Green Bee-eaters, Black Ibis and Demoiselle Crane, are the birds that stay in sanctuary till March. Ring Dove, Brown Dove, Skylark, Crested Lark and Blue Jay are some birds that remain in this sanctuary throughout the year. Birds migrate in this region from far-off countries like Siberia, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Central Asia.
